Last time I was in India, I joined in on a game on an enormous red cinder public oval. There must have been at least 20 games at once. Think it was in Alleppey, Kerala.

When I walked across the maidan in Calcutta in 1982 there were loads of impromptu games of cricket going on - me and my mates watched for a while, and a few of the locals came over to talk to us. When they found out that we were English, they talked non stop about Mike Gatting, Graham Gooch, and “Iron Bottom” - it took us a few moments to twig that they were taking about Ian Botham due to our slowness in understanding their strong accents, despite their excellent English. Calcutta was a strange place back then (probably still is…?), sights and smells I have never witnessed before, nor since 😳

Don't go Shane. I don't think anyone's deliberately ignoring anything, sometimes things just register with some more than others, some jokes land better with some than with others, and some people just ignore stuff without it being a deliberate head in sand actiion.

The Indians I know are almost demented about cricket. They will WhatsApp their mates constantly during IPL games. The interesting thing is they tend to follow the teams of their favourite players, and not necessarily their local team.

I love the way the Indian community in London is into cricket almost (or exactly) on a cultural level. Can't explain why but it's just something I find a nice thing.

When India play cricket in this country you see far more Indian flags than you do English flags at any sporting events.
