I am an eBay seller, since I am not working, don't get any benefits as my wife earns too much as a part-time nurse and some personal stuff I can sell, which I no longer want. Forgot that I had a massive relist blitz last week and have a shed load of sells going through. Thankfully I have a fair few of repeat customers who understand my situation. It's tough being self employed at the best of time, but when there's a bit of a crisis, jeez it's hard work.

Agreed Wu - so simple in principle but we’ve managed to make it everything but.

Happening all over GB The National Trust have lost many loyal volunteers because their woke policies that are imposed by management that feel that every box must be ticked.

The shambles with volunteers and codes of conduct speaks of people in power who don’t really know what they are doing. It’s a reasonable concept in principle.

Vicarious liability - an organisation may be held liable for the actions of volunteers, or representatives, even if they did not directly authorise actions

Nobody is arguing in the slightest that volunteers should not be made to behave according to rules laid down by the organisation. That is exactly why I asked to see a copy of the code whilst I am considering volunteering. The problem is non-volunteers are being judged on a code they have not signed up to and which they are not even allowed to see.

I’m not sure a contract is binding if there’s no consideration* You can have an agreement which sets out expectations and roles etc but there’s nothing legally binding for volunteers. Absolutely right to try to ensure volunteers understand what is expected of them but you can’t hold a volunteer to a contract - you just don’t have to let them volunteer anymore. And if they do something bad then call the cops. We seem to think we are the cops, and the courts, and the executioner, and the obituary writer.

In law, a volunteer represents the Club and the Club could be held responsible for their action. There's a special legal term that covers but too long since my law exams

As I said the club is entitled to make volunteers sign contracts etc. The Dons Trust would be if they restricted it to people who had volunteered or as a minimum freely published the code that was being applied. I object to being refused a copy of the code when apparently I may already be being judged on it - and I'm probably breaking it today ;)

A few years ago, I worked a few hours a week for a market research company. One project was speaking to small businesses about apprenticeships. One charity I spoke with explained that they had salaried staff and volunteer staff. The only difference between them was volunteer staff were unwaged. For everything else they were treated equally, they all signed contracts, they were all subject to reviews, they all could be giving warnings and be subject to disciplinary procedures if necessary.

All sounds bonkers, but volunteers are still representing the club and reputation does matter.

Not good to read, Nick. Someone should have volunteer welfare at the top of their priorities. Seems we have some strange ideas ruling the roost instead. Still can’t get to the bottom of who is benefiting from the exceedingly poor conduct from our boards and secretaries.

There’s no need for a code of conduct for volunteers. They’re volunteers. There’s no contract. If you don’t want them to volunteer you just tell them. Trying to get the. To agree to self-censor on social media and in conversations with their family is peak Dons Trust right now. I’ll try and find what the Asst Secretary asked me to approve in order to “protect myself from the libel and abuse on Discord” - you couldn’t make it up.
Sorry to hear that nick. I volunteered for years, first proofing the matchday programme and now for quite a few more years on the supporters' coaches. I have never had a problem - probably because my "bosses" were John The Don and now the legend that is Mandy B.

I am so glad that I no longer volunteer for the football club any more. I am also pretty amazed that I was ever let back into the stadium after my resignation speech to The Stadium Manager in the very busy Phoenix after the game where I may have called him some rude names and told him some hurty truths. I then had a similar conversation five minutes later, with our safety officer in the seating area outside the pub and I may have very publicly called him some rude names too. My third strike was bumping into our CEO right by the Beasant statue, who was accompanied by a group of suits and I tried to educate him as to how the club were mistreating its volunteers. Having had to put up with the clubs terrible behaviour towards people who had given up their time for years and to see how they treated those people put me in a position where I could not continue to be complicit and it came to a point where I had to make a stand. The club lost seven hard working volunteers that day. Part of the problem was the documents full of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors that they kept giving us, telling us we had to comply with. The Volunteer code has always been as elusive as the holy grail , but they still wanted us to sign up to something that we hadn’t seen and used to quote rules to us that apparently existed somewhere.
