The only examples I can think of where football clubs don't own their own ground and it working long term is where the government or local authority paid for or own the stadium. Man City, West Ham and Crawley for example in this country. Tax payers money spent for the good of the community or something like that.

I think that Italian clubs not owning their stadia is a historical fact, not their choice, and is widely seen as a problem for them, seriously limiting their income- generating potential.

6MDM: "Owning your own stadium is 100% the most important thing a football club can do". I'm not sure that Inter & AC Milan, Roma & Lazio and Genoa & Sampdoria fans would agree. They clearly have their own identities and fierce rivalries whilst sharing the costs. The problem with owning ones own stadium is that one has an incredibly expensive asset that only effectively gets used 25 times a year. There is a price to pay for that luxury - one which most fans appear unwilling or unable to pay - which is presumably a large reason why most clubs lose money even if the players were volunteers.
