MAD my mate was working on the basis it might work as some sort of deterrent if say you were suddenly confronted by the horrendous situation some were faced with on that train yesterday ie no escape. Also on the basis it’s probably impractical to carry a 9 inch bread knife around with oneself 24/7.

Oldy, places like Surbiton are extremely untypical of the filth that a substantial amount of people have to encounter using public transport. The 'incidents' are numerous and rising. I've had the absolute misfortune to have to be in and out of east/north London over the last 6 months. Not a public transport journey you'd want to be doing if you're female or elderly. I've seen crap that 30 years ago would of resulted in arrest. Not any more. It's out of control.

And it’s only “in the moment” where we learn how we react to these things. 3 lads tried to swipe my rucksack in a pub after work last week. I got it back.

There are apparently 18K trains scheduled each day, so nearly 6 million in a year. This is the first mass attack I can remember since the 2005-7 attacks. Whilst each case of violence is worrying and like TF I'm waiting to hear more of this, it isn't going to affect my use of public transport.

I think I’d like to know a lot more detail about yesterday’s incident. I understand they don’t want to set rabbits running. Problem with carrying a knife/weapon with you for self defence is that you then have to be prepared to use it. And if lots of people start doing that it’ll be bedlam because some people behave differently when they know they’re “armed”.

Thankfully don’t use transport very often but from now on I will be carrying a can of heat spray, something I already do if walking the dog alone in isolated places. Know a few women who do this.

DM, I can assure him that a Swiss Army knife will be no use at all when confronted with a killing blade.

On an upbeat note, with only a third of the season completed, we are half way to safety assuming a target tally of 50 points. On a downbeat note, a mate told me this morning that he is going to keep one of those Swiss Army knives on him at all times from now on as “that’s what it’s got to now in Britain”. At least yesterday’s savagery wasn’t ’terror related’, so we’re told. Well if that isn’t terror related, what is ? Just another isolated incident. Move along now, there’s nothing to see here.
