Pow was a busy pub at lunchtime in the 80s,full of workers from the estate opposite. Last time I went there a kiwi called Terry was landlord, his 2 boxer dogs would slobber all over your jeans.

I was once a barman in the PoW, Morden Road. It was a very scuzzy pub.

One final thing about Fish, I remember when we played Spurs on a Sunday at Selhurst in 1992 I went to Crawley v Yeovil in the FA Cup 4th qualifying at Crawley’s old ground the day before and Fish was playing for Crawley, he was only 29 but his hair had turned completely white

Wimbledon v Palace at home in 84/5 was also played on on a Sunday so presumably agreed by both in order to boost crowds, we won 3-2 after scoring 3 in about 10 mins. Carlisle away in 1986 was played on a Sunday enabling me and my brother to go to Workington the day before

Morning all. StD - the PoW always only seems to open in the evening these days, and there's never anyone in it when I pass it.

I’ve got lots of celeb claims to fame but the only sporting one is that I once did a tug of war with that bloke from The Bill.

Paul Fishenden and Kevin Gage shared a flat in Merton Mansions during the mid 80's, almost opposite us. It was known as the Pleasure Dome. One of our founding fathers lived there in more recent times.

Bob - this was in Cambridge when I was a student (1977 or 1978), he was happy to chat with people in the clubhouse after the game too… 👍

A4E - I used to see Geoff Capes a lot - either at the Crystal Palace Sports Centre where I was having indoor nets or in the Wimpey Bar at Crystal Palace where he was eating hamburger after hamburger. A really nice guy who was happy to give some of his time.

StD - possibly due to the Miners strike resulting in power shortages hence the need to kick off at something like 14.00 to avoid the need to use floodlights??

That would make sense StD. I remember when they were building that Sainsbury's in the early 1980s. I even remember the two tier terracing it replaced at the Whitehorse Lane end [Link] and the corner away supporters subsequently got put in before that end got redeveloped too when we were playing there [Link] There seem to be quite a few on here with connections to players around that time. I doubt there were many in the late 1990s when instead of using local players we were using substandard Scandinavians.

Same age as me six million. PALACE played a lot of games mid 80s on Sundays something to do with sainsburys and the car park from memory.

Kevin Bedford was in my form class and Dean Blackwell was year below.
I'm the same age as Ryan and Fitzgerald. It was only primary school level I played for Wandsworth (we moved out of the borough in 1980 when I started secondary school, hence competing in the Surrey Schools cup in 1982). We used to live in Balham and I went to primary school in Clapham Park. I was a better athlete than footballer (I used to win the annual Wandsworth Schools championships for my age group at sprinting held at Tooting Bec every year) but whilst I still like watching football now I have totally lost interest in athletics.

Hodges was very good, even if his right foot was just for standing on. Some of the things he could do so effortlessly was a joy to watch. Shame most of it was untelevised, so I just have my memories to fall back on. He was lazy though - no chance of him being a wing back!
6 million: hodges and Morris were my age range. They played for Merton and Surrey (I played for wandsworth /London ). I played with Hodges twice for the “south of London” in an unusual rep game. Even then hodges was class

Mark L - I played for Wandsworth Schools too, in 1980. I played against Vaughan Ryan and Scott Fitzgerald when they played for Victoria Schools and also in the same Sunday league team as them for a while (Putney St Mary). We all played for London Schools that year too. That was about as high as my football achievements went.

I did score twice in the Surrey Schools cup final in 1982 played at the old Plough Lane (shame we lost 4-3). We had to use the building between the North Stand and the Wandle End to the away end as a changing room as we were not allowed in the proper one.
That Palace away game 41 years ago, to this day, remains my favourite Wimbledon game for either incarnation, bar none. I seem to recall it was a Sunday game for some reason too. I went to secondary school in Upper Norwood and where I lived was full of Nigels. I was the only Wimbledon supporter. Despite how crap they were, they were so confident of beating us. To absolutely annihilate them on their own pitch like that was sheer bliss. We could have had 10 that day it was so one-sided, especially the second half. To see their supporters so annoyed and unhappy just compounded my happiness. Being in that corner with 2,000 other wombles laughing our heads off is what football is all about. Happy days.

I always felt with Fishenden that he never quite fulfilled his potential. He had a great record in the youth and reserve teams but it never quite happened for him consistently enough in the first team. He seemed to be injured or out on loan at clubs in Scandinavia or down under a lot so I don't know if that helped or hindered him.

I felt more sorry for Stewart Evans as he was directly forced out with the arrival of Fashanu. He went to WBA and then bobbed around a few league teams before dropping into non-league. Last I heard he had settled back in his native Rotherham.
